Obituary for Alvin Curtis

Alvin Curtis, Sr. peacefully departed this life and gained his heavenly wings on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at his home in West Palm Beach, Fl. He was born on August 11, 1964, to the late Ernest Curtis, Sr. and Mary Etta Curtis of Riviera Beach, Fl. At an early age, Alvin’s parents instilled in him excellent family values, a phenomenal work ethic, and the skills to repair anything. Alvin began by assembling and repairing bicycles and that developed into his ability to repair and maintain his thriving real estate business.

Alvin was an avid football player starting at John F. Kennedy Junior High School and continuing at Suncoast High School. His advanced football talents led him to a full scholarship at Sam Houston State University playing the position of offensive tackle. Alvin was recognized for his football skills receiving the Letterman Award from 1983 to 1985. He also received an honorable mention in the 1984 and 1985 All-Gulf Star Conference. Through Alvin’s efforts the team won the Conference Championship. Due to Alvin’s superb football skills, he was drafted by the NFL St. Louis Cardinals now known as the Arizona Cardinals. Additionally, Alvin played for the Miami Dolphins where he has continued to be a devoted “Dolfan”. He traveled frequently to the Miami Dolphins’ away games and had plans to attend the game in Germany for the upcoming season.

Subsequent to his football career, Alvin returned home to Riviera Beach where he commenced his career in law enforcement at the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. During this time, Alvin was introduced to Mallorye Cunningham by Glenn Ponder. After dating for one year, they were married on April 23, 1988, at Tabernacle Baptist Church. They settled in West Palm Beach, where they raised their sons Alvin and Marcus. He was a devoted husband and father who always put his family first.

In 1990, Alvin joined the Palm Beach County School District Police Department where he served for 24 years. He worked at multiple schools that support “at-risk” children throughout the county and completed his career at Palm Beach Lakes High School. He was known for his willingness to help others and was respected and admired by his colleagues.

Outside of work, Alvin had a passion for fishing and cooking. He also enjoyed spending time cheering on his favorite sports teams and vacationing with family.

Alvin retired in 2014 and soon discovered he had a serious health condition. On December 31, 2017, Alvin received a new heart that gave him a new lease on life. Mallorye joined him in retirement where they traveled extensively, enjoyed many fine home-cooked meals prepared by Alvin, and regularly entertained friends and family.

Alvin will be remembered for his kind heart, his unwavering love for his family, and his positive outlook on life. His loss leaves a void in the lives of those who knew him, but his memory will live on through the countless acts of kindness and the love and memories he shared with his family and friends.

Alvin, Sr. is preceded in death by his parents: Ernest Curtis, Sr., and Mary Etta Curtis; and his brother John Henry Curtis. Alvin leaves to cherish his memory: Mallorye Cunningham Curtis (wife) of 35 years, Alvin and Marcus (sons). Also left to cherish his memory are his brothers: James Curtis and Ernest Curtis, Jr.; sisters Mary Anders, Clara Cobb (Artise), Lillie Trotter, and Ann Anders (Clinton); a host of other relatives, family, and friends.
