Obituary for Florence Mills

Florence Louise Davis Mills was born on January 18, 1925, in Miami, Florida, to the late Solomon Davis Sr. of Miami, Florida and the late Beatrice Pinder Davis of Hatchet Bay, Eleuthera, Bahamas. She was the second of three children, Solomon Davis Jr., and Nesbitt Davis who both preceded her in death.

Florence moved to New York to live with her Aunt Marjorie Munnings and her family shortly after finishing high school in Miami, Florida. She continued her education at the University of State of New York where she obtained her bachelor’s degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She began her nursing career at Harlem Hospital and worked for many years in the Pediatrics division.

She met her husband the late George Victor Mills in Harlem, New York, and they later married on May 5, 1979. After many years of working in a field she loved, she retired with her husband to West Palm Beach, Florida.

After a few years of living in Florida, Florence being the energetic and hard-working person that she was, decided that retirement was not for her! Her cousin Hazel (deceased) told her about an opening at Lourdes Noreen McKeen Senior Living, and she jumped at the chance to get out of the house and keep herself busy. She returned to the nursing field and worked at Lourdes Noreen McKeen Senior Living for nine years. When her husband fell ill, she retired for a second time to care for him until his death on May 1, 1998.

After a few years of being home, Florence began to realize that her career had kept her away from church and decided to visit a church in her neighborhood called Bethlehem Baptist Church. She was committed to strengthening her relationship with God and began making the 20-minute walk to church every Sunday as she didn’t drive! She was very independent and refused to ask for a ride to church despite the many standing offers. After a period, she joined the church and was eventually made the “Mother of the Church”. She developed many lasting relationships and continued to attend church regularly. She was always going with the church to various functions. She remained a faithful member and continued to attend church up to the time that she was compelled to stop due to declining health.

Florence was a generous person and was always helping her family whenever there was a need. She never asked for anything in return and was happy to see her family prosper and become successful. When she had something on her mind to say, she would start her sentence with “I’mma be frank with you”, but despite her “direct” and “frank” approach, she had a kind heart and truly loved her family.
