Obituary for Lucy Haines (Cherry)

Lucy Jane Cherry Haines was born January 12, 1940, in Bertie County, North Carolina, to the late Mattie Lee and Otis Cherry. She was the eighth of nine children (all deceased).

Lucy graduated class of 1959 from W.S. Etheridge High School. After graduating, she moved to New York City, New York, where she became a nanny. On a bus trip to and from West Palm Beach, she met Richard Haines. Two and a half months later, in Washington DC, Richard and Lucy were joined in holy matrimony on March 9, 1960. Six children came from this union.

Lucy held several jobs. She was very passionate about caring for others. As a CNA, Lucy worked at the county nursing home. Later she became a home health care provider and then a private duty provider. After ten years, she decided to do childcare in her home. Then after she pursued her love for cooking, becoming a cook at Lighthouse Elementary School, and later accepted the position as the head cook at Beacon Cove Intermediate School. Lucy’s dedication and hard work earned her several outstanding awards. She retired in June 2006.

In 1961, Lucy was baptized at Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was a faithful member serving as a Cradle Roll teacher, Usher, Head of Hospitality, and other various positions.
Lucy loved spending time with her family. Her strong values helped her strive to be the perfect soulmate to her husband, the mother bird to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, friends, and even strangers in the street. She gave so much of herself, taking care of the sick and shut-in, watching kids, and cooking for others, and she was not afraid to speak her mind. She was a hero. On Friday, December 30, 2022, after battling a long illness, the Lord called Lucy to rest. No more pain. Lucy Jane Cherry Haines will truly be missed.

Lucy was preceded in death by her sons, Alphonso and Richard Haines Jr, and grandson, Jamal Drummond.
