Mary Edith Lopez was born in Gibson, Georgia on June 10, 1940 to the parents of Ozelle and Bobbie Lee Willoughby Johnson. The Lord called Mary home on Friday, May 20, 2022.
She found a church home at New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed her time as a member of Choir #1 and other church auxiliaries. It was at the church where she developed friendships that would last a lifetime. One such friendship was with Thelma Taylor, affectionately known as Tiny. She later relocated to the greater West Palm Beach area, but eventually left South Florida and settled in Daytona Beach.
To know Mary was to know a fighter. She never gave up or gave in. Mary was known as a person who did not hold back, voiced her opinion, gave her all, and lived life to its fullest.
Mary lovingly became known as “mom” to a great number of people. Every person she encountered was just a friend she had not met. She never met a stranger!
Her hobbies were fishing, bowling, board games and playing cards. Mary was also an avid tennis watcher. One of her greatest passions in life was cooking and feeding her family and friends. Alyssa, her one and only grandbaby, was her pride and joy.
Mary was preceded in death by her father, Ozelle Johnson, her mother, Bobbie Lee Willoughby Johnson, her brother, Joe N. Johnson, and her sister, Renay Johnson.
She leaves to cherish her memory: a son, Hiram Daniels III; two daughters, Kimmy Laycock (Dan) and Tangela Brathwaite (Philip); a granddaughter, Alyssa Brathwaite; a goddaughter, Tierra Williams; relatives Ruby, Kirk, & Rosalynd Allen, Jaylyn DeBose, and a “granddog” named Sophie. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, and friends.
