Obituary for Peggy Schwarha

Peggy Ann Schwarha was born on December 22, 1948 in Crown Heights Brooklyn, New York to the late Thomas and Thelma Toye. Peggy was the youngest of three children and was preceded in death by her brothers Van Dyke Toye a.k.a. Idris Muhammad and Thomas Toye, Jr.

Peggy was gifted and talented academically and was a Merit Finalist at Franklin K. Lane High School where she graduated at the age of 16. Peggy briefly attended Brooklyn College then began her career at the New York Telephone Company now known as Verizon.

Peggy’s career at Verizon spanned 20+ years where she excelled and was recognized for her achievements. In the late 1990s, Peggy retired and made a choice to continue investing in herself and pursued higher education again. She later earned her bachelor's degree from SUNY Empire State College and upon graduating, took her studies further to become a Certified Alcoholism/Substance Abuse Counselor. Peggy’s benevolent spirit and passion for helping others propelled her to obtain her Master of Social Work from Hunter College to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

Peggy was a mentor and confidante that helped others in their professional and personal pursuits and was known for her kind nature and servant heart. Peggy served where needed and took joy in helping to improve the lives of others and to uplift her overall community. She was a devoted member of Queens Tabernacle and would occasionally deliver the morning announcements.

Peggy was married to the late Edward Augustus Schwarha. While they later divorced, they shared a daughter Vashti. Peggy was a brilliant mother who nurtured and encouraged her daughter through every step of her life.

Peggy had a strong connection to the arts and with nature itself and took delight in the beauty, the colors and how serene they would make her feel. The Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Botanic Gardens were two of her favorite places to visit in Brooklyn, New York. Eventually, Peggy relocated to South Florida to be with her daughter and son-in-law and grandson. Rides by the beach were a family favorite and she even enjoyed visits to Disney World.

Peggy is deeply missed by family and friends and leaves behind her daughter Vashti S. Putney and son-in-law Junius H. Putney III and the apple of her eye, grandson Junius H. Putney IV.
